Read the Recipe
First take time to actually read the recipe and see if you have all the necessary ingredients. There is nothing more frustrating than starting to bake and then discover you are missing an important ingredient. Take the time to assess what it is you will be baking, if you have the time required to do so, ensuring you have all the ingredients and equipment to make this a successful bake.
Prep Your Kitchen and Your Ingredients
Gather all the ingredients together and measure your ingredients. Get all the equipment you require out and prepped so there is no waiting. You will likely require measuring cups and/or a digital kitchen scale. Next prepare any pans you will be using, be they traditional pans, or silicone mats or pans. Have cooking spray or parchments paper available if needed. Ensure you have the correct measuring tools, like measuring cups, spoons, and scoops. Keep close at hand any spatulas, whisks or other mixing implements that will assist you with completing your recipe. Finally, ensure you have lots of clean counter space, and space in your refrigerator or freezer.
Get an Oven Thermometer
Always check to see if your oven is operating correctly. It is very common for oven readings to be inaccurate, which can impact the success of your bake. An oven thermometer will help a great deal in checking to see if your oven is really heating at it's true temperature. Also, do not open the oven door when your item is baking as this will cause a lot of heat to leave the oven and can impact the recipe greatly. Use your oven light and window to check on the item you are baking.
Do Not Over Mix Your Batter or Dough
Over mixing a batter or dough can cause your recipe to lead to a tough baked good. Only mix doughs and batters just until combined. Do follow your recipe's directions, but always be conscious that it is a rule of baking to not over mix. Over mixing will impact the finished texture of your bake.
